Sestak is the Democratic Option in Pennsylvania

by: RDemocrat

Fri May 14, 2010 at 22:36:00 PM EDT

Tuesday in Kentucky we will go to the polls and choose our Democratic nominee. While I will not endorse in that race on the same day up in Pennsylvania there is another Senate race that I really hope Joe Sestak wins. I think this would send a mini "tea-bag" message to the Democratic establishment that while not as rabid as the right-wingers our base is tired of being taken for granted too. We do not have to reach out to opportunists like Specter to win elections or enact agenda and it is time our leadership realized that and fought for real Democratic values, not only those that are "convienient".

Obama Campaigns for Specter, Sestak Not Amused

by: RDemocrat

Tue Sep 15, 2009 at 23:06:27 PM EDT

You know, one thing we should all realize right now with so many Democrats in the Senate who only support our agenda when they see fit is that we simply need to elect more real Democrats who will fight to that chamber. While I have been trying to stay away from Democratic primaries since coming to Hillbilly Report, I have taken a position in one. I do not trust Arlen Specter or his motives in switching to the Democrats. I am hoping the Democrats in Pennsylvania nominate Joe Sestak.

Two Polls Show Kentucky's Mood

by: RDemocrat

Fri Sep 04, 2009 at 10:29:37 AM EDT

Two polls released today are showing Kentucky's mood on a couple of important fronts. One is gauging our support for a public option and the other looks into our Senate race. They were both conducted by Research 2000 for Daily Kos.

Specter Buys Into "Death Book" Argument on Fox News

by: RDemocrat

Thu Aug 27, 2009 at 00:08:54 AM EDT

Well, they say when in Rome do as the Romans do. Despite being a newly minted Democrat, when Arlen Specter is on Fox News he simply cannot help himself from getting back to his Republican roots. In a recent interview for Fox News, Specter actually gave credence to the idea that the Veterans Administration has a "Death Book" for Veterans.

Maurice Sweeney: Another Fine Democrat in Kentucky

by: RDemocrat

Tue Aug 04, 2009 at 11:31:37 AM EDT

With the big two candidates, Jack Conway and Daniel Mongiardo running they have sucked up most of the oxygen in the Democratic Senate primary. In a way it is understandable they have name recognition and have provided plenty of fireworks so far. But the fact of the matter is they are not the only Democrats running for this nomination. I have spoken some on Darlene Price and will again soon. However, at Fancy Farm I met another candidate for our Democratic noimination for Senate in Kentucky I did not know about. I want to introduce everyone to Maurice Sweeney.

Sestak Will Announce Senate Run Tommorrow

by: RDemocrat

Mon Aug 03, 2009 at 15:40:10 PM EDT

I have been pretty critical of Arlen Specter after his switch to the Democratic Party. I feel that he did not see the light, he merely saw the polls. He knew he could not win a Republican primary and wanted a free ride on the Democratic ticket. Well, now that free ride is over as Joe Sestak will announce tommorrow he is challenging Specter in the Pennsylvania Democratic Primary.

KY-Sen: Democratic Race Sizzles in Fancy Farm

by: RDemocrat

Mon Aug 03, 2009 at 01:05:11 AM EDT

Here is my roundup of the Democratic fireworks at Fancy Farm from Kos and Progressive Blue.

Ah, Fancy Farm. A throwback to the old days of politicking when candidates could not use huge dollars to run 30 second ads and actually mingled with the voters. Political careers have been made or broken for well over a century in the blistering August heat of Western Kentucky. Although the weather was unseasonably cool this year, the two main competitors for Kentucky's Senate seat provided plenty of fireworks.

Mongiardo Spells out Opposition to Cap and Trade in Paducah

by: RDemocrat

Thu Jul 16, 2009 at 02:03:17 AM EDT

Unfortunately one of the major players in the Kentucky Democratic Senate Primary was in Paducah today and I was not able to attend. Daniel Mongiardo came here to talk about his opposition to Cap and Trade. After losing the second quarter fundraising race he sought to cement some support among Western Kentucky voters who may be worrying that some of the cheaper electric rates in the nation may be going up.

Conway Posts Impressive Fundraising Numbers

by: RDemocrat

Wed Jul 08, 2009 at 13:31:18 PM EDT

I just got an email sharing Jack Conway's fundraising numbers from last quarter. After hearing Trey Grayson's haul, Conway's numbers are impressive.

Lt. Col. Andrew Horne Endorses Jack Conway

by: RDemocrat

Mon Jun 29, 2009 at 20:17:36 PM EDT

While I am still undecided in the Kentucky Democratic Primary, one Democrat I have a lot of respect for has made up his mind. Lt. Col. Andrew Horne, who needs to run for something again has endorsed Jack Conway for U.S. Senate.

Specter Faces the Music on Two Fronts

by: RDemocrat

Thu Jun 25, 2009 at 20:32:25 PM EDT

Many Democrats across the nation like myself have questioned Arlen Specter's motives in switching parties. We do not believe he saw the light, he merely saw the polls. I never celebrated much with Specter as a Democrat anyway. It seems to me we already have plenty of fence-sitting Corporate Democrats who have not the courage to fight for anything but their own survival.

Some Thoughts on "Clearing the Field"

by: RDemocrat

Sun Jun 14, 2009 at 23:08:57 PM EDT

A strange phenomenon seems to be happening in our party too often. When there are possible primary races our leadership sees fit to "clear the field" and allow hand-picked candidates to run unopposed. In Kentucky, we felt the pain of having other candidates we liked more swept aside for an establishment candidate who could self-finance and the result was disaster. In the end we almost pulled off an upset with a more Progressive challenger that dared stay in the race.

KY-Sen: Babies Abound in This Race

by: RDemocrat

Fri Jun 12, 2009 at 23:47:25 PM EDT

The Kentucky Senate race on both sides is shaping up to be a very interesting affair. Besides all the high drama queen activity on the Republican side it appears as if Mitch McConnell and Jim Bunning are not the only ones who are going to be childish.

Deeds Campaign Stuns Establishment

by: RDemocrat

Tue Jun 09, 2009 at 22:01:33 PM EDT

Something happened in the Democratic primary for Governor in Virginia. Despite having one candidate with the money and establishment support another candidate won. Creigh Deeds has won the Democratic nomination over Terry McAuliffe, and hopefully it may send at least a small message to our leadership.

Another Tuesday has rolled around. Here at Hillbilly Report we use Tuesdays to look around at candidates and campaigns. Deeds Leads in Virginia??

by: RDemocrat

Mon Jun 08, 2009 at 22:29:18 PM EDT

I had not been watching the Democratic primary in Virginia and had assumed that Terry McAuliffe would win that race. However, it seems that the like the Democrats there in Virginia might surprise me and others all over the country by deciding for themselves. It appears on the eve of the primary, McAuliffe might actually be trailing Creigh Deeds among voters.

Arlen Specter Lovefest Shows Our Party's Weakness

by: RDemocrat

Sun Jun 07, 2009 at 21:46:11 PM EDT

You know, as a grassroots activist for the Democratic Party in a tough area it seems I always here one thing. Many people will readily agree with many of the ideals of our party, but they always come down to one reason why they consistently vote against us. It always boils down to "Yeah, the Democrats have some good ideas but they are too cowardly to fight for the things I agree with them on". Unfortunately, many times these folks are right, and one need only look at the recent love-fest with former Republican Arlen Specter among our leadership to see yet another example.

Ky-Sen: Mongiardo and Conway Campaigns Spar Over Poll

by: RDemocrat

Thu May 28, 2009 at 21:36:33 PM EDT

Crossposted from Hillbilly Report.

With the Republican Senate primary Soap Opera starting its second season, all has been pretty quiet along the western front on the Democratic side. However, a poll released by the Mongiardo campaign has stirred up the Democratic race as both campaigns sparred over the poll today.

Republican Senate Primary Soap in Kentucky Continues

by: RDemocrat

Tue May 19, 2009 at 11:30:48 AM EDT

I wrote this diary just a couple of days ago about all the drama in the Kentucky Republican Senate Primary. Despite the lovefest between Rand Paul, Trey Grayson, and Jim Bunning which will undoubtedly end with a stab in the back to Bunning from one or both, it turns out that Kentucky's Crazy Uncle and it's most hypocritical Senior Senator just flat out do not like each other.

Daniel Mongiardo Showing Strength in Eastern Kentucky

by: RDemocrat

Mon May 11, 2009 at 12:07:39 PM EDT

In the First Quarter fundraising totals, Lt. Gov. Dan Mongiardo easily outpaced incumbent Republican Senator Jim Bunning. Many of these contributions came from the eastern part of Kentucky where Mongiardo is well-known and liked. From an area that has not had a Senator since John Sherman Cooper this can be understood. While Mongiardo considers this a sign of strength, others saw it as a weakness to his state-wide appeal.
