In the race to replace Kentucky's "Crazy Uncle" Jim Bunning in the United States Senate a new poll is out. It has found that Lt. Gov. Dan Mongiardo and radical eye doctor Rand Paul with significant leads in the Democratic and Republican primaries. Besides the top four of Mongiardo, Conway, Paul and Grayson no other candidate seemed to garner much support.
The Kentucky Senate race was getting quite boring. Leave it to eccentric, Looney Tune Jim Bunning to heat things up. One would like to think that the outgoing Senator who was shunned by the McConnell machine because he is a can or two short of a six pack decided to shake up this race but then you realize that well, Bunning is a can or two short of a six pack. However, his callous, uncaring and hypocritical "stand" earlier this week against the nation's unemployed has indeed ignited the Kentucky Senate race, which quite frankly was becoming a yawner.
March 2, 2010 Lexington, Kentucky Democratic candidate for the US Senate Daniel Mongiardo, standing in front of senator Jim Bunning's Lexington, Kentucky's office, let Jim Bunning and Rand Paul know exactly how he feels about the unemployment extension block. Rand Paul supporters were there to support Senator Jim Bunning. Both the Mongiardo and the Bunning supporters were very vocal. I didn't do a head count, but it appeared to me there was an equal number of people there for both sides of this issue. Click here to view Mongiardo's video. We also shot video of the Rand Paul and Jim Bunning supporters, click here to see that video. Click here to view photos of the event. Joe Sonka over at Barefoot and Progressive was also there, click here to see his post and video. His video is also after the fold.
I even got in the mix.
Bluegrass Politics James Pence and Earl Newberry exchanged words during protests outside U.S. Sen. Jim Bunning’s Lexington office.
By now everyone knows about the block Jim Bunning decided to put on unemployment benefits. However, this move did not just effect the unemployed. All across America many federal programs will furlough 2,000 other workers without pay and will indefinately end construction projects across the country.
Ah, we remember the most hilarious civil war that broke out between Mitch McConnell and Jim Bunning which toppled the crazy uncle of Kentucky politics and recruited another McConnell "golden boy" akin to disgraced Governor Fletcher in Trey Grayson. But, enter fringe right-winger Rand Paul into the mix and you have the makings of a brand new Republican civil war in Kentucky to laugh at.
One thing we have known in Kentucky for a long time now whatever political stripe you are is quite simply, Jim Bunning is the crazy uncle of Kentucky politics. His antics have been well documented, forcing Mitch McConnell to use his machine to force the walking embarrassment to a disgraced party out of the race in favor of someone he hopes can actually win against either strong candidate the Democrats can field. Well, now we are finding out that if a Repubican is elected in Kentucky we will not only lose a crazy uncle, but gain a crazy nephew.
Bluegrass Politics Paul said he can win the May 18 Republican primary in Kentucky without support from “mainstream” GOP organizations, such as the National Republican Senatorial Committee. “I’m not positive that their endorsement actually is a help at this point,” Paul said. “Most people in Kentucky don’t want to be told by somebody in Washington who to vote for.”
When Democrats go to the polls in November to elect members of Congress and the US Senate will there really be any difference between the Democratic and Republican candidates? The answer to that question depends on the candidates and to some extent, where you live.
Fired up and ready to go? Only if you're a Tea Bagger or a Right Wing Coservative. Gotta hand it to these folks, they are fired up and ready to go and the Progressive Democrats seem to be lazy, ready to sit on their rear ends and whine. Virginia, New Jersey and Maine are proof positive of lackadaisical, lazy, carefree Progressive Democratic efforts. When I wrote this April 15, 2009, I wasn't kidding:
The party that lays claims to work ethic and morals is nothing but, in my opinion, a bunch of lazy ass, immoral slackers and here's my proof. The Republican State Leadership Committee, no less, put up this video of Jack Conway, speaking at Fancy Farm in 2007, on their site. This is the video I shot of Jack Conway speaking at Fancy Farm in 2007. The Republican State Leadership Committee copied my video without permission. Check the audio glitch at 0:49 seconds into my video and the same audio glitch 0:33 seconds into their video. I am asking they take their video down and apologize for using my work without permission. I am also requesting Trey Grayson and Rand Paul tell The Republican State Leadership Committee to get off their lazy asses and shoot their own videos. Both videos are after the hump.
I have been so tangled in the healthcare fight that I failed to mention we had a new Senate poll in Kentucky yesterday by Survey USA and it brought with it some hard realities in this race. It is going to be a very close primary on the Democratic side and it promises to be one tough race in the fall of next year.
Boy, was I wrong. When I met some of Rand Paul's supporters and Rand Paul himself at Fancy Farm I actually thougth that they were halfway reasonable folks. I did not agree with them on anything but they did not seem as maniacal as many Republicans. Well, I guess I am not a very good judge of character.
It appears as if another serious candidate for retiring Senator Jim Bunning's seat will emerge today. Rand Paul, son of former Presidential candidate Ron Paul who himself developed an almost cult-like following with very deep pockets will be announcing his candidacy during the maniacal spewings of Glenn Beck today.
See the screen capture of our Youtube videos of Jack Conway, Daniel Mongiardo, Trey Grayson and Rand Paul. Rand Paul wins the Youtube views hands down. His video also has the most comments and the highest ratings. Trey had better get ready for a real fight. Rand Paul is for real.
As I suspected Jim Bunning will not run for re-election in 2010. This opens up the field for Kentucky Republican "golden-boy" Trey Grayson. However, Rand Paul, son of the former Presidential candidate may run in the primary too.
After a "successful" first season, the Republican Soap Opera around their Senate nomination has fired up once more. First, lets recap the first season. Mitch McConnell thinks that Jim Bunning is old and nuttier than squirrell turds and should quit. He has recruited another "golden-boy" akin to former corrupt Governor Ernie Fletcher to run instead. Rand Paul, son of former eccentric Presidential candidate Ron Paul want to run too. Of course, in typical Republican fashion they love them some Bunning, but will stab him in the back if needed.
With the Drama Queen Republican Senators and faithful horde of loving back-stabbers in the Republican primary for Kentucky's Senate seat making so many headlines it is almost forgivable to forget that we have some Democrats running. It is just so much fun to watch the mess on the Republican side.
