The Kentucky Senate race was getting quite boring. Leave it to eccentric, Looney Tune Jim Bunning to heat things up. One would like to think that the outgoing Senator who was shunned by the McConnell machine because he is a can or two short of a six pack decided to shake up this race but then you realize that well, Bunning is a can or two short of a six pack. However, his callous, uncaring and hypocritical "stand" earlier this week against the nation's unemployed has indeed ignited the Kentucky Senate race, which quite frankly was becoming a yawner.
Ah, we remember the most hilarious civil war that broke out between Mitch McConnell and Jim Bunning which toppled the crazy uncle of Kentucky politics and recruited another McConnell "golden boy" akin to disgraced Governor Fletcher in Trey Grayson. But, enter fringe right-winger Rand Paul into the mix and you have the makings of a brand new Republican civil war in Kentucky to laugh at.
You know with all the troubles partly caused by the Republicans being the "party of no", America is in a sour mood. Nothing good is getting done in Washington because so many Democrats are wanting to be "bi-partisan" and so many Republicans just think the road to Congressional control is to make Democrats look bad. Now, many of them are predicting Senate control after the 2010 elections. However, even with the toxic environment for incumbents this will be a long road for Republicans.
With all the hoopla made by Republican looney-tunes who demand even nuttier candidates than they already have one expects a very lively primary season. However, it is not only the Republicans who are promising to have a lively primary season. In a couple of states at least including my own of Kentucky primaries are firing up and getting ugly. Then of course, there is always the chance of new primaries if Democrats stab their Progressive bases in the back.
You know, one thing we should all realize right now with so many Democrats in the Senate who only support our agenda when they see fit is that we simply need to elect more real Democrats who will fight to that chamber. While I have been trying to stay away from Democratic primaries since coming to Hillbilly Report, I have taken a position in one. I do not trust Arlen Specter or his motives in switching to the Democrats. I am hoping the Democrats in Pennsylvania nominate Joe Sestak.
Well, they say when in Rome do as the Romans do. Despite being a newly minted Democrat, when Arlen Specter is on Fox News he simply cannot help himself from getting back to his Republican roots. In a recent interview for Fox News, Specter actually gave credence to the idea that the Veterans Administration has a "Death Book" for Veterans.
With the big two candidates, Jack Conway and Daniel Mongiardo running they have sucked up most of the oxygen in the Democratic Senate primary. In a way it is understandable they have name recognition and have provided plenty of fireworks so far. But the fact of the matter is they are not the only Democrats running for this nomination. I have spoken some on Darlene Price and will again soon. However, at Fancy Farm I met another candidate for our Democratic noimination for Senate in Kentucky I did not know about. I want to introduce everyone to Maurice Sweeney.
I may miss a Tuesday now and then but Tuesdays are a look at some candidates and campaigns I have taken interest in. I hope anyone will feel free to tout their own candidate I may have missed in the comments.
A strange phenomenon seems to be happening in our party too often. When there are possible primary races our leadership sees fit to "clear the field" and allow hand-picked candidates to run unopposed. In Kentucky, we felt the pain of having other candidates we liked more swept aside for an establishment candidate who could self-finance and the result was disaster. In the end we almost pulled off an upset with a more Progressive challenger that dared stay in the race.
Another Tuesday has rolled around. Here at Hillbilly Report we use Tuesdays to look around at candidates and campaigns. We hope eventually to have folks from all over rural America updating us on their favorite candidates, and rising stars in the Democratic Party as well as the Progressive movement. Please feel free to tout your candidate in the comments!!
With the Republican Senate primary Soap Opera starting its second season, all has been pretty quiet along the western front on the Democratic side. However, a poll released by the Mongiardo campaign has stirred up the Democratic race as both campaigns sparred over the poll today.
Ah, like sands through the hourglass, so are the Days of Our Kentucky Senate Race!! Yes, here in Kentucky it seems that our Republican primary for Senate is seeing enough drama to make William Shakespeare proud. The primary is a whole year away and we have already seen enough brownnosing, backstabbing, and fooling around to make classic shows such as "Dallas" seem benign.
Under the "Imagine that" category it seems that wishing death upon Supreme Court justices, using the Lord's name in vain at reporters that inquire about your polling, and just generally being a loon will cause you approval ratings to plument. Well, now we know why Bunning was so offended about his poll numbers.
